My favourite track taken from Sharon Jones and The Dap-kings‘ spanking new LP, featuring Lee Fields and Charles Bradley…

Lee and Charles performed with The Menahan Street Band a month or two back at The Bloomsbury Theatre, with Mark Ronson warming the floor, spinning some great funk and soul tracks. If you missed that, make sure you DON’T miss Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings LIVE at Koko TOMORROW NIGHT! (It says Sold Out, but word is there’s still some tickets going if you know where to look!)

Say-no-more.

The crazy cartoon charactor that is Sharon Jones and her group the mighty Dapkings (best known for their work with Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson)bless us again this year with their 4th long player. “I Learned the Hard Way” comes into stores on April 6 and damn it sounds good!

For a taste of what’s to come, Daptone Records have kindly provided the album’s title track for download.

More info:
Produced by Bosco Mann and recorded on an Ampex eight-track tape machine by Gabriel Roth in Daptone Records’ House of Soul studios, this record drips with a warmth and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax. Sharon’s raw power, rhythmic swagger, moaning soulfulness, and melodic command set her firmly alongside Tina Turner, James Brown, Mavis Staples, and Aretha as a fixture in the canon of soul music. From the lushPhilly-Soul fanfare that ushers in “The Game Gets Old” at the top of the record, to the stripped down Sam Cooke-style“Mama Don’t Like My Man” at the tail, the Dap-Kings dance seamlessly through both the most crafted and simple arrangements with subtlety and discipline. I Learned the Hard Way is the “Daptone Sound” at its finest.
