Sorry, these aren’t up for download yet, but here’s the first single, ‘My Guitar Whales’ taken from Paul White’s forthcoming album ‘Paul White & The Purple Brain’. A psychedelic stripped-down banger, it mixes an Eastern-influenced organ hook, rock hard drums, fuzzy synth bass and delirious chanting to mesmerising effect.
On the flip, The Bright Future twins a naggingly catchy piano refrain with tumbling drums and the quirky touches that give White’s music so much character.
Don’t forget to download the first official giveaway ‘Ancient Treasure’ from the album in my previous post here.
A collaboration of sorts, Paul White & The Purple Brain is based around and inspired by the work of little-known Swedish psych-rock guru S.T. Mikael. Having been granted access to Mikael’s back catalogue, Paul White found a unique source of inspiration and challenged himself to create an album using the Swedish multi-instrumentalist’s work as the sole basis for his output. The result is an endlessly inventive showcase of what’s possible when armed with just a sampler, a few studio toys and a fertile imagination and marks a significant step forward from 2009’s cult hit ‘The Strange Dreams of Paul White’.

West coast rapper Trek Life has teamed up with fellow left coast producer J.Bizness to release a brand new (and free) 10 song EP. Titled Rhymes Within Reason, the EP is produced entirely by the IllRegular Instrumentals producer, who laces Trek with his melodic yet raw production. Complete with the heavy drums and gritty chops, he is quickly becoming known for thorough work with both Trek and others, including Ras Kass, LMNO, Buff1, and more.
The EP features a number of other game-changers, including producer/MC and frequent collaborator Oddisee, as well as Wyann Vaughn, Richard Wright, Mykestro, and Ragen Fykes. Rhymes Within Reason is the first of three projects in 2010 for Trek, who will be working together with Mello Music Group to release entire projects with Oddisee (Everything Changed Nothing) and DJ Babu (Fire Outside).
Rhymes Within Reason is available for free download through Trek Life’s BandCamp page: http://treklife.bandcamp.com/album/rhymes-within-reason, or check it out via the widget below:

The first single from the new and final Little Brother Album.
Official blurb:
Critically acclaimed rap duo Little Brother are back and ready to takeover speakers for the final time together with their new album, LeftBack. Dropping on April 20th via Hall of Justus, LeftBack will mark the end of an illustrious career by partners in rhyme Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh. The album features production from the likes of Khyrsis, Denaun Porter, J.Bizness and guest vocals from Torae, Truck North, Jozeemo, Chaundon, Median, and more. The send-off for the North Carolina hip-hop heavyweights begins with the release of “Curtain Call,” the poetically titled first single from LeftBack. Rapper Big Pooh sets the tone for the album by declaring that “this is it, the last monologue / last act in the play, you could say the epilogue.” A booming synth line, driving bass and staccato drum pattern intertwine to provide the backdrop for the occasion, while Phonte drives home the album’s message by rapping “You know we don’t quit / but when it’s curtain call then that’s all you gonna get.” The song “basically sums up the history of our career as Little Brother,” says the duo. “This is the last first single you will hear from Little Brother.”
